Do It Yourself Solar Panels-How To Reduce the Cost of Solar Panels

Monday, September 6th, 2010

Do it yourself solar panels are becoming incredibly popular as a result of the cost of solar panels at retail level.

The benefits of solar panels for the provision of energy to your home are enormous. They include the use of a plentiful supply of a clean energy, the opportunity to resell your excess back into the national grid and the further opportunity to manufacture your own solar panels for sale to friends and neighbours.

And this can be scaled up into a full time business if you have the desire because the cost of manufacturing a solar panel runs at around $200 whereas you will easily sell them for $500.

It used to be a complex enough task to make them, but now with the increasing sharing of information on the internet and other sources, ordinary every day folk are building their own solar panels for less than $200, provided they have a good set of plans and the correct tools.

Other benefits include
•    A fun diy project
•    Huge saving in your energy costs
•    Environmentally friendly renewable source of clean energy.

Many governments also provide incentives and rebates for the use of solar energy and when you consider that the average cost of a solar panel in 2007 ranged between $1000 and $1500 then the project is a no brainer.

The cost of solar panels

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

The cost of solar panels could be a matter of consideration if you are going to buy a pre-prepared solar panel to produce electricity for your house. But if you have decided to make your own solar panel then you can reduce the cost by a significant amount by using some of the scrap solar cells. The price may also be able to differ on the basis of size of solar panels. If you have to light up a big house then be ready to spend around $ 50000+ but small house can reduce this cost up to $ 25000.

Sometimes sizes of the solar panels are same but their costs are different. This may happen because of the amount of electricity produced by them. This difference in output may arise because of different functional age, their quality and technology that are being used for manufacturing. Earlier the solar cells were big in size and less efficient as compared to modern ones because of revolutionary advancement in technology and quality.

The cost can be compared by a simple experiment, buy two identical solar panels, use one for three years continuously and store the other in a good condition. The effective life span of an ideal solar panel is 20 to 25 years and their value decreases overtime. So you will find that the solar panel that was kept safely in storage will give you more as compared to the one that was in active use for 3 years at the time of sell.

Another way to compare the value of two solar panels is to find out the output to be produced per dollar. The idea ratio could be $ 4.30 per watt. You can spend almost $ 215 for 50 watt solar panel. So next time you go to buy a solar panel, keep these rates in mind. If you have optimum space to keep the solar panels then go for a cheaper and old product. This will help in reducing the cost and it may be as effective as the newer one which consumes less space. But if you are planning to make your own solar panel this you can save your money even more. By using scrap solar panels you can reduce your investment on the energy. Scrap cell doesn’t mean bad quality products; they are those pieces which were broken at the time of manufacturing. These are available at cheaper rates in markets but consume more space. The cost will reduce up to $ 3/ watt. Scrap cells can be an advantage for those who have enough space to keep their solar panels made of scrap cells and for those who want to save their money.

Solar panels could be cost effective as well as efficient in their performance if chosen correctly after a bit research. This is a onetime investment so doesn’t buy without exploring the market. Choose the best deal for yourself and have solar energy on minimum cost.

Cost of solar panels – DIY Makes It Cheaper

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The cost of solar panel installation is steadily getting more favored in the US and in other developed states internationally.

If you’re still living wholly on the grid then perhaps home solar energy panel installation is something that you might would like to consider at some point in the future. There are actually countless reasons to making an investment in home solar energy panel installation.

The cost of solar panel installation differs depending on whether you buy them ready to go of make them yourself:

That implies if you decide you want a four thousand watt (W) system (or a four kilo watt (kW) system), the panels would cost about: $3/W x 4,000W = $12,000. Wiring would cost around: $1/W x 4,000W = $4,000 and installation would cost $4,000.

The DIY or DIY solar cell kits only cost 1/4 of that. So a 60 watt solar power panel can be built and installed for $80 to a $100, which comes to between $5,000 and $6,500. And if you know where to look, you can almost buy the material you want to build your solar power panel for at least a fifth of the cost! Reducing the price of solar panel installation even more!
It’s really far easier than you might imagine to build your own solar energy panel and to install it and you don’t have to make all your solar cells at once .

In America and plenty of other Western countries, the governing body gives motivations through rebate to individuals that use solar energy panels, so bear that under consideration when assessing the cost of solar panel installation.

That’s a brief breakdown of the cost of solar panel installation and how to make solar panels cheaply.

As an expert it’s quite easy to build ever lasting sources of green energy. My aim is to direct everyone to easy and simple solutions that save the earth while saving bills as well.

Read This If You Are Worried By The Cost Of Solar Panels

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

The cost of solar panels can be quite large, and the installation can add even more expenses, so many people simply can not justify the price in advance, and then dare not make the change. Even if it is a serious investment, the installation of solar panels can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month, not only in their electricity bills for a house, but some may not realize that, too.

Because the price of necessities like food, electricity, gas and water, you need to save where you can. This is another barrier for many homeowners who are considering the cost of solar panels when wanting to install a solar system. But since the solar panels generate electricity from the sun, once installed they start creating usable energy for your immediate family right away.

This will reduce the electricity bill immediately, and maybe even completely eliminate the bill. Some solar panels generate surplus power, and as a result their power company pays them every month!

With electricity and heating costs down to zero it will be significantly easier to also also reduce the gas bill, so you need to consider this too when calculating the cost of solar panels. Free from the gas stove thanks to electric – and the same for gas water heaters? They both can be replaced by an electrical system. And as you continuously generate their electricity, you will not worry about a drastic increase in the electricity bill. Not only will you have eliminated a lot of your gas bill, but also your worries about further utility bill increases.

In hot climates, summer air conditioning increases electricity bills enourmously. And with more cars, which are produced with rechargeable batteries, it won’t take long before the bills for electricity increase even more. Here too, the cost of solar panels can be offset.

There are some other benefits that come with having your own solar system, too. For instance, in the case of a downpour, your neighbors who are still paying for electricity are vulnerable to power outages, surges, and damage due to this. But you won’t be, if you have installed a solar system.

Good solar panel systems are designed to store all the electricity generated by additional panels of high capacity deep cycle batteries. Most professional options in the design and installation of solar panel systems are configured to provide power for several days at a time without sunlight and should not be affected even through the worst of the storm and power outages.

By now you will certainly appreciate that it makes sense to accept the cost of solar panels and to get a system. People in your area will envy you and will ask you for advice on hoe to install solar panels, once they see how well your system works, and how much money you will save with it.

The Real Cost Of Solar Panels

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Considering solar panels to power your home?  Want to know how much it will really costs?
Depending on your plans and goals, there are different types of solar panels, with differing costs.
•    Water heating solar panels are the least expensive.
•    Air heating solar panels are mid-range in cost.
•    Photovoltaic solar panels for electricity are the most expensive type.
To compare, a solar panel system could be used to generate the energy needed to power a water heater for a small apartment.  The estimated cost for these solar panels would be $100 to $3,500.  To heat water for a larger townhouse with a swimming pool, the cost would be from $3,500 to $7,000.  And for a detached, full sized home, about 2500 square feet, the cost would be from $7,000 $10,000.
A solar panel system for heating air costs more, from $500 for the small apartment to $25,000 for the full sized home;  and photovoltaic solar panels needed to generate electricity are estimated to cost from $10,000 to $25,000.  And if you want to power everything – water heater, air heat and all electricity – you’d be looking at a solar panel cost of $175,000 for a full sized house with swimming pool.

An important determination is to know exactly how much energy you really use.  Not necessarily what you are using today, but what you truly need.  The more energy you produce, the more solar panels you will need, and the cost for your system will increase accordingly.  So when planning your solar panel requirements, be sure to consider where you can cut energy consumption and where you can improve energy efficiency.

There are other financial considerations when planning your solar panel system.  Depending upon where you live, you may be eligible for tax credits or even rebates.   You will have lower utility bills.  And if your solar panel system generates more energy than you consume, you may be able to sell the access to your local utility company.  And while the solar power industry is still relatively young, there are used solar panels available at lower costs.

How Do You Determine The Cost Of Solar Panels?

Friday, August 20th, 2010

There are 3 main factors that affect the cost of solar panels — quality, age and technology. This applies as much for brand new panels as pre-owned ones. You may have chanced upon a solar generator system that is relatively cheap. But that may not be a good deal…yet. You have to check with the manufacturer or retailer against the 3 factors above. More often than not, there is a good reason for the price that you pay (or not).

Adding to the complexity, the concept of “cost” involves more than just adding up the retail price of solar panels, hardware installation and maintenance costs. The total price you pay must be measured against the power these panels will produce for you. Your general aim should be to pay less for every watt the photovoltaic panels produce for you.

Manufacturers produce different types of solar panels of different quality. While better quality panels command higher price tags, they tend to last much longer. This increased lifespan very often justify the added cost. However many people will rather save money by choosing lower quality solar panels than cough out the difference for higher quality ones. This is understandable.

As solar panels produce electricity under the effect of sunshine, they begin the irreversible process of aging. As they get older, their resale value drops. Thus it is important to verify with your sales representative the age of solar panels you are receiving. Stored solar panels, on the other hand, maintain their full lifespan. Therefore solar panels do not usually lose their value while stored on shelves (away from sunlight)…unless a new photovoltaic technology emerges to replace them. By then manufacturers will have to slash their price to move them out of the storehouse.

Despite their image, used solar panels aren’t all that bad when it comes to payback period. Although they have a shorter lifespan and a slightly lower efficiency, most of them are still in good working condition and can last many more years. Best of all, they’re cheap. Therefore you should keep your mind open — as long as the price per watt and warranty conditions justify the purchase, you should be on your way to purchase cheaper energy.

As technology improves, the cost (per watt) of solar panels decreases. Currently, consumers often get solar panels below $5 per watt. Understandably, prices vary from location to location. Therefore you have to contact a few solar panel manufacturers to understand how they price their products before you sign on the dotted line.

If you want to install a solar panel system that can supply your entire house with power, it is not surprising to find manufacturers quoting you a whooping $25,000 to $30,000 for the entire installation. This may appear to be expensive. But the system can serve you for more than two decades and they usually pay for themselves slightly after the first. Therefore you’ll be able to live on free electricity for another ten years after the payback period.

Certainly, a manufacturer’s quotation depends on how big your house is and your average electricity consumption. If you manage to find energy wastage around the house and reduce them, the size of your system may be smaller. This means you end up paying less. In every household, there are wastages that account for a huge portion of energy consumption.

A DIY solar panel is a good alternative to a commercial, off-the-shelf system. Those of us who are apt at working with simple tools and electrical circuits can make for ourselves a homemade solar power system. Do not be mistaken…these are not some shoddy projects that over-the-edge enthusiasts make. The solar cells and related components are from renowned manufacturers. The DIYer’s only involvement is putting various components together to make a solar panel, and then install this solar panel on their roofs. These can last as long as commercial panels at a fraction of the cost.

To end up with a good system, you’ll need to do a little fact find to have a better understanding of why solar panels are priced the way the are. Hopefully, if you compare between suppliers, you may be able to find a solar power system that suit your budget and energy needs.

The Lower Cost Of Solar Panels Helps To Make Solar Power A Reality

Monday, August 16th, 2010

The most important/expensive part of most modern home solar power systems is the solar panel itself; thus the solar panels price drives the cost of the system. This single component handles the conversion of sunlight to power and choosing the right model for your home can have a huge impact on your systems efficiency. These panels have become less expensive and more efficient in recent years and offer a much better value over the long term than ever before. Understanding the differences between panels can help you also understand the reason for a particular solar panels price. Even though most models of panels for homes are less expensive than ever before, trying to balance the cost of solar panels with their efficiency will help you make the right decision.

Standard Sizes, Varying Output Voltages

Modern panels are available in a standard physical size and are typically offered at several different output voltages. Normally the higher voltage panels allow you to harvest more of the power they produce because they suffer less losses in the conversion process. This is a good thing to keep in mind when shopping for a home solar power system since it can allow you to generate more power for your home from a given panel.

Output Power’s Importance

The other factor you need to consider is the output power a given panel can produce. Because these modern solar panels are much more efficient in their conversion of sunlight to power, they can typically produce far more power than older models from a given amount of sunlight. In some cases this can be several times more power than panels sold even a few years ago were able to provide. This is important because even though the cost of solar panels that are more efficient may be higher, you will need less of them to produce the power your home requires and the overall system price will be less as a result. The smaller the number of panels means less roof space is required for mounting as well as a simpler installation overall. All of this leads to reductions in cost for your home solar power system. Bear in mind that when comparing the various choices for solar panels for your home since your first thought might be to choose the least expensive panel available; in the long run choosing a more efficient solar panel would be a better decision, even if it costs a little more initially.

Check the Warranty

Another consideration that affects the cost of solar panels is their warranty. Most modern solar modules are guaranteed for 10 years or more against defects and failure. Even though this may seem like a good warranty, most panels don’t fail completely. Failure in a solar panel typically happens gradually over time and will slowly lower the output power that the panels produce for the home. This slow decay in their output power means that they haven’t actually failed, they’re just producing less power. Some of the newer solar panels for homes provide a basic warranty that covers any failures to the panel itself as well as an additional warranty to ensure it continues to produce a given amount of power over its useful life. This type of double warranty is important since it will typically ensure the replacement of a panel that falls below a certain percentage of output power over time. Even though solar panels that offer this type of warranty may be more expensive than others without the warranty, this peace of mind can easily justify the solar panels price.
