No More Exploding Laptop Batteries?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Aww darn, no more cool explosions from exploding laptop batteries!  STOBA, a new material technology will steal the joy of seeing your laptop explode from faulty batteries. Boy, it seemed like a week didn’t pass without Apple, Toshiba laptop battery, Sony, Dell laptop battery, Sanyo, Lenovo, or some other laptop manufacturer issuing a battery recall due to exploding batteries. Well, apparently STOBA will make consumer electronics safer.

Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has developed STOBA, a material technology that prevents lithium-ion batteries from overheating, catching fire or exploding.

Check out a video of how the technology works, including a demonstration on why lithium-ion batteries explode. There is an animated explosion in the demo, so enjoy.

ITRI’s STOBA material technology for Lithium-ion batteries has received a 2009 R&D 100 Award.

Innovative Technology is First to Ensure the Safety of Lithium-ion Batteries
Used in Many Consumer Electronics and Electric Vehicles

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Nov. 12, 2009 – ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute), Taiwan’s largest and one of the world’s leading high-tech research and development institutions, will accept a “2009 R&D 100 Award in Energy Devices” today, in Orlando, Fla., for developing STOBA (self-terminated oligomers with hyper-branched architecture), the first technology to enhance the safety of lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by a publication as prestigious and influential as R&D Magazine,” said Dr. Alex Peng, senior research scientist and deputy general director at ITRI’s Material and Chemical Research Laboratories (MCL). “During the past five years, the STOBA team worked diligently to develop this technology. They have truly earned this achievement.”

Li-ion batteries, the power source for many consumer electronic devices, including cell phones, laptops, MP3 players, cameras, and hybrid and electric cars, are susceptible to overheating, which can cause fires and explosions. In the past, safety standards for Li-ion batteries could not be raised because there was no solution available.

To meet the growing demand for high-safety lithium batteries, ITRI successfully developed STOBA, which has fundamentally resolved the safety issue. By integrating a nano-grade high-molecular polymer, which forms a protective film, into the Li-ion battery, a locking effect is generated when the battery encounters excessive heat, external impact or piercing and interrupts the electrical and chemical action, preventing explosions. In 2008 and 2009, STOBA passed the mandatory shorting and piercing experiments conducted by battery manufacturers in Japan and Taiwan. These intensive nail penetration and impact tests confirmed STOBA’s effectiveness in preventing internal shorting and overheating in Li-ion batteries.

For the past 47 years, The R&D 100 Awards have annually identified and recognized the 100 most significant and revolutionary technologies newly introduced to the market. Past winning technologies include the printer (1986) and HDTV (1998). An R&D 100 Award serves as a mark of excellence to industry, government and academia and confirms the technology is one of the top innovations of the year. This year’s winners will be honored at a ceremony this evening in Orlando, Fla.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a nonprofit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical services. Founded in 1973, ITRI has played a vital role in transforming Taiwan’s economy from a labor-intensive industry to a high-tech industry. Numerous well-known high-tech companies in Taiwan, such as leaders in the semiconductor industry TSMC and UMC, can trace their origins to ITRI.

Innovative Research
ITRI is a multidisciplinary research center, with six core laboratories, five focus centers, five linkage centers, several leading labs and various business development units. How to Prepare a “Bug Out” Laptop Kit

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Can you imagine being away from your computer for an extended period of time? No internet, no email, no funny jokes, no games to play? Many people have found themselves in this position when the unexpected happens. In the event of a natural disaster, terrorist event or a bird flu pandemic, having access to your computer could be a lifesaver. Are you one of the many people who have all their personal and financial records stored on their computer with no back up and no way to access them in the event of an emergency?

Because we are so wired these days, a backup laptop computer should be considered part of your essential survival gear just as much as a 3 day supply of food and extra water. You can either choose to use your existing laptop or buy a used one specifically for use in the event of an emergency.

Now you could buy one of the laptops that are made to withstand extreme conditions but that will set you back several thousand and probably isn’t necessary. You can find a number of good used laptops online for a few hundred dollars. It doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest, it just needs to get the job done when you need it to. A good basic laptop with a cd rom and a good battery will do the trick.

Items you will want to add will include a wireless card for accessing the internet. While your internet access may be down you may be able to find a hot spot for access. Most laptops will have a built-in modem, if not you will want to add a modem card also. Cell phone connectors so you can access the internet via your cell phone. You may need to add internet access to your cell phone plan. Modem and network cables, you need to be able to plug and play. Power cable and ac adapters. A 12-volt adapter and converter. You could run your laptop directly off 12 volt or run it through a converter to charge the battery. A spare battery. Any other laptop accessories you feel necessary such as external mouse or even a solar battery charger. With this setup you should be able to access the internet either through dialup or wireless. You may also want a small external hard drive or flash drive. A portable printer is nice but not absolutely necessary. All needed software should be loaded along with a backup or emergency startup disk. Don’t forget to load in your favorite bookmarks.

You will need to decide what files you want to take with you. You should have a backup from your main computer of your personal and financial records. Burn these to a cd. You could have another cd with your household inventory complete with digital pictures. If your house is destroyed you have a record of the contents. Consider scanning in family photos so you have a backup of those. Don’t forget to have a copy of all your passwords for accessing online sites and accounts. Address book and email contacts will also be important. Any other or vital documents that would be hard to replace and are essential to recovery after any type of emergency should be backed up. Consider scanning in copies of your will, birth certificate, marriage certificate, titles and deeds. Because this information is private consider security software to encrypt it in the event it fell into prying eyes.

You may want to build a cd reference library of information that could help you survive a disaster and recover. Backwoods Home Magazine offers back issues on cd including one specific to survival. The Mother Earth News also has back issues on cd. Both would give you a wealth of survival and how to information. You might also include foreign language cds, learning cds appropriate for your children’s ages, games, if you can’t live without them and to pass the time. Reference books could include encyclopedias, yellow pages for your area, maps, cookbooks and anything else that will help you out.

If you have high-speed internet access at home, get a list of dialup numbers from them for around the country or consider an AOL account or other national provider. If you can’t access the internet one way you should be able to access it another way.

Now, the whole idea of this setup is to “bug out” with it. Grab and go in the event of an emergency. You will want to store it all in a good laptop case with easy access. For extra protection you may want to consider a waterproof case (good in the event of a flood) or a hard side case such as an aluminum one that photographers use to protect their equipment. Other family members should know where you keep it so if you are not at home and they need to leave they can grab it for you.

Before you pack it all away, test it out. Make sure your connections are working and it starts up without problems. Test it once a month and make sure the batteries are still charged. Try accessing the internet through dialup and a wireless hot spot. Work out the bugs before you need to use it in an emergency.

Having a backup bug out computer will help you when the unexpected happens and get you back on the road to recovery.

Laptop Battery Knowledge?Battery History

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

We can’t live without batteries in our everyday life.when your open your laptop to work or play games, you have to make sure the Battery works order.another day it’s would drive you crazy if you can’t use your laptop, only because there were something wrong with the laptop battery.so.the batteries are very importent to everybody.but how much you know about the battery?do you just know little about history of them.today.i will talk about this.

Due to its universal applicability, electrical power plays a central role in the technology which surrounds us. The “disadvantage”: Electricity must be consumed by the way. It cannot be stored or created by simple devices; it must be obtained directly from a power station. The quantities of electrical energy which can be stored directly, e.g. in capacitors, are so small that they can only be used in units with very low power requirement to bridge interruptions in supply. Therefore electrical energy must be converted into other forms of energy if it is to be stored.

The history of the development of electrochemical cells is crucial to the scientific study and industrial applications of electricity, for prior to the rise of electrical grids around the end of the 19th century, they were the main source of electricity. Successive improvements in battery technology permitted the rise of major electrical advances, from early scientific study to the rise of telegraphs and portable electronics.

In 1749, Benjamin Franklin first used the term “battery” (Dell xps m1530 Battery)to described a set of linked capacitors he used for his experiments with electricity. These capacitors were panels of glass coated with metal on each surface. These capacitors were charged with a static generator and discharged by touching metal to their electrode. Linking them together in a “battery” gave a stronger discharge.

The following is thetimeline of battery history
1748 – Benjamin Franklin first coined the term “battery” to describe an array of charged glass plates.
1780 to 1786 – Luigi Galvani demonstrated what we now understand to be the electrical basis of nerve impulses and provided the cornerstone of research for later inventors like Volta.
1800 – Alessandro Volta invented the voltaic pile and discovered the first practical method of generating electricity. Constructed of alternating discs of zinc and copper with pieces of cardboard soaked in brine between the metals, the voltic pile produced electrical current. The metallic conducting arc was used to carry the electricity over a greater distance. Alessandro Volta’s voltaic pile was the first “wet cell battery” that produced a reliable, steady current of electricity.
1836 – Englishman, John F. Daniel invented the Daniel Cell that used two electrolytes: copper sulfate and zinc sulfate. The Daniel Cell was somewhat safer and less corrosive then the Volta cell.
1839 – William Robert Grove developed the first fuel cell, which produced electrical by combining hydrogen and oxygen.
1839 to 1842 – Inventors created improvements to batteries that used liquid electrodes to produce electricity. Bunsen (1842) and Grove (1839) invented the most successful.
1859 – French inventor, Gaston Plante developed the first practical storage lead-acid battery that could be recharged (secondary Dell Inspiron 2650 Battery). This type of battery is primarily used in cars today.
1866 – French engineer, Georges Leclanche patented the carbon-zinc wet cell battery called the Leclanche cell. According to The History of Batteries: “George Leclanche’s original cell was assembled in a porous pot. The positive electrode consisted of crushed manganese dioxide with a little carbon mixed in. The negative pole was a zinc rod. The cathode was packed into the pot, and a carbon rod was inserted to act as a currency collector. The anode or zinc rod and the pot were then immersed in an ammonium chloride solution. The liquid acted as the electrolyte, readily seeping through the porous cup and making contact with the cathode material. The liquid acted as the electrolyte, readily seeping through the porous cup and making contact with the cathode material.”
1868 – Twenty thousand of Georges Leclanche’s cells were now being used with telegraph equipment.

1881 – J.A. Thiebaut patented the first battery(Dell inspiron 8600 Battery) with both the negative electrode and porous pot placed in a zinc cup.
1881 – Carl Gassner invented the first commercially successful dry cell battery (zinc-carbon cell).
1899 – Waldmar Jungner invented the first nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery.
1901 – Thomas Alva Edison invented the alkaline storage battery.
1949 – Lew Urry invented the small alkaline battery.
1954 – Gerald Pearson, Calvin Fuller and Daryl Chapin invented the first solar battery.

Scientists Invent 30 Year Continuous Power Laptop Battery

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Your next laptop dell 6400 battery could have a continuous power battery that lasts for 30 years without a single recharge thanks to work being funded by the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory. The breakthrough betavoltaic power cells are constructed from semiconductors and use radioisotopes as the energy source. As the radioactive material decays it emits beta particles that transform into electric power capable of fueling an electrical device like a laptop for years.

Although betavoltaic laptop  batteries sound Nuclear they’re not, they neither use fission/fusion or chemical processes to produce energy and so (do not produce any radioactive or hazardous waste). Betavoltaics generate power when an electron strikes a particular interface between two layers of material. The Process uses beta electron emissions that occur when a neutron decays into a proton which causes a forward bias in the semiconductor. This makes the betavoltaic cell a forward bias diode of sorts, similar in some respects to a photovoltaic (solar) cell. Electrons scatter out of their normal orbits in the semiconductor and into the circuit creating a usable electric current.
The profile of the batteries dell inspiron 6400 battery can be quite small and thin, a porous silicon material is used to collect the hydrogen isotope tritium which is generated in the process. The reaction is non-thermal which means laptops and other small devices like mobile phones will run much cooler than with traditional lithium-ion power batteries. The reason the battery lasts so long is that neutron beta-decay into protons is the world’s most concentrated source of electricity, truly demonstrating Einstein’s theory E=MC2.
The best part about these cells are when they eventually run out of power they are totally inert and non-toxic, so environmentalists need not fear these high tech scientific wonder batteries. If all goes well plans are for these cells to reach store shelves in about 2 to 3 years.

Fuel Cell Technology Is Blooming! Bloom Box Powers Google And Ebay

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

The 8 year wait is finally over.  Bloom Energy, in dramatic fashion, has finally released the Bloom Box.

Run on biogas made from landfill waste, the Bloom Box fuel cell is cheaper than grid power, cleaner than grid power, and perhaps most importantly, is finally available.  Throughout this 8 year, ultra-secretive, project Bloom Energy has received $400 million in funding from the same venture capitalists who funded Google and Amazon.

The Bloom Box is ideal for large businesses that want to save money on power bills and significantly reduce their carbon footprint.  Every business, predictably, wants both of these things.  Google was the first company to try out the Bloom Box.  20 other large companies including Fed Ex, Wal Mart, Staples, and Ebay have since followed suit.

For the last 9 months Ebay has created 15% of its electricity with 5 Bloom Box’s that sit, silently, on the campus lawn.  How have they performed so far?

“Its been very successful, they do what they said they would do,” said John Donahoe, CEO of Ebay.  In fact, the Bloom Box has saved Ebay more than $100,000 on electricity costs in the last 9 months, while cutting natural gas usage in half.

In comparison, the 3000 solar panels blanketing the rooftops of Ebay’s buildings create 5 times less power than Bloom Energy’s fuel cell system, which require almost no space at all.  This begs the question: how good is fuel cell technology?

Fuel cell technology is very good.  It has the ability to create clean, off-the-grid, power for applications as small as the iPhone or as large as the Freedom Towers.  No combustion is required and the fuel cell can be powered from a variety of different fuels.  These benefits have a lot of people excited.  One such person is John Door, the venture capitalist who discovered Google (and subsequently turned a $25 million investment into market capitalization of over $108 billion).

“New energy technologies could be the largest economic opportunity of the 21st century,” said Door.  Kleiner Perkins, the Silicon Valley venture capital firm who invested in Bloom Energy, was not shy or stingy when it came to signing checks.

$400 million have been made available for Bloom Energy thus far.  It is clear that executives and investors have kept the big picture in mind throughout the project. The long-term goal is to have a Bloom Box in every home (at a cost of $3000) within the next 5 to 10 years.

Although Bloom Energy has been the most hyped and heavily funded company, they are certainly not the only ones making breakthroughs in fuel cell technology.  Over 100 clean-tech companies are rumored to be involved in the race to the market, with ClearEdge Power and Bloom Energy leading the charge.

ClearEdge Power went public with their fuel cell, the ClearEdge5, about 5 months ago.  It has not received nearly as much attention as the Bloom Box, but is equally if not more impressive.  Ideal for large homes and small to medium sized businesses, the ClearEdge5 runs on natural gas and provides enough electricity and heat to eliminate the need for grid power.  The CE5 is currently available in California and is already saving home and business owners large sums of money.

It looks like fuel cell technology has finally stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.  These “power-plant-in-a-box fuel cell things” have perplexed people for years, deemed as complicated, unrealistic, and at times, too good to be true.

Well, so did the microwave oven, the cell phone and the laptop.

Laptop concepts of tomorrow

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

In May, 2003, laptop computer sales exceeded those of desktop computers for the first time. This trend has only continued through the years, and today, many computer owners no longer use a desktop PC at all. As laptops have become more ubiquitous, however, computer manufacturers have been forced to use innovation as a tool to keep customers buying. Currently, a number of extremely exciting new age laptop design concepts are being tested, with new features with features that will likely appear in stores by 2010-11.

Dual-screened laptops are likely to become very popular soon in certain markets, musicians being one prominent example. V12 Design and Fujitsu are both testing dual-display machines with touch screen capability. This would allow musicians to put a virtual turntable or mixing board where the keyboard would normally be, providing valuable immediate visual feedback. This design would have a number of other exciting uses as well, such as having the ability to turn the laptop on its side and hold it open like a book.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your laptop could constantly keep you updated with crucial information, without the need to constantly keep it open on your desk? Soon, laptops will have the ability to sync wirelessly with external displays. At work, your display will keep you informed with upcoming appointments, and at home, a smaller display, perhaps on your wristwatch, will flash if you receive a new email. Laptops will become more wireless in other ways, as well. Intel is currently testing a technology that will allow laptops to be charged simply by placing them on a network of magnets that can transmit power wirelessly. eliminating the need to carry an AC adapter. Simply place the magnetic array in the location where you will be using your computer, set the laptop on it, and go!

In the coming years, laptops will continue to become more ecologically friendly, and may soon offer days of battery life between charges. Solar chargers are already available for a variety of portable devices, and as this technology continues to improve, other companies such as LG are planning to take things in a different direction. LG recently showcased a concept laptop utilizing fuel cells rather than standard batteries. Not to be outdone, other manufacturers like Sony are putting battery-saving technologies into use today by miniaturizing their products to levels never before seen. Their Vaio P laptop is about as wide as a clutch purse and as thick as a cell phone, and promises battery life of up to six hours.

With all of these exciting new technologies debuting within the next few years, there has never been a more exciting time to be a computer owner. In the coming years, laptops will become easier to interact with, and more useful for specialized tasks. They will continue to become smaller and more stylish, and the wires will continue to fall away as increased battery life and efficiency will make it less necessary to tether your laptop to the wall.
