Solar Panel Waste Recycled

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

In DeForest, Wisconsin, 5N Plus Inc., currently a Canadian cadmium telluride (CdTe) producer serving the solar panel industry, plans to open a solar module deconstruction facility.

Cadmium telluride is used in thin-film solar applications, and 5N Plus Inc., which plans to begin the solar panel recycling process with the coated soda-lime glass from obsolete solar panels and solar panel production failures, says it may eventually use the leased, 60,000-square-foot facility to recover tellurium dioxide from discarded solar panels as well.

5N Plus Inc. has already received a conditional permit from the DeForest Board of Trustees for a facility using chemical processing, according to reports from the Sept. 8 board meeting. The permit describes the building as located a 4375 Duraform Lane in Dane County.

5N’s project submission delineates the first phase of the recycling process as treating about 10,000 tons in the first phase, with production rising as customer demand increases. The second phase of the project, scheduled within the year, sees 5N recycling full laminated solar modules with 17 employees.

The move is seen as a way for 5N to diversify its financial base. Currently the company derives 85 percent of yearly revenues by providing cadmium telluride to First Solar. However, First Solar company officials were quick to emphasize that the recycling initiative is not a joint effort between First Solar and 5N.

In describing the expansion into DeForest, 5N’s project analysis suggests that it could accumulate up to 7.5 tons of tellurium dioxide in the first year alone. Given the cost of tellurium, the initiative could generate up to $2 million just in the chemical’s value, with several times that amount garnered as a result of recycling. One 5N company executive projects $73 million in revenue in 2010 (with the company’s fiscal year ending May 31).

The DeForest plant is also one of 5N’s largest, and could also be used to produce CdTe, in addition to the tellurium and other materials rescued from recycling. A similar, but smaller, plant in Germany already does such recycling and chemical production work, and a company spokesperson noted that CdTe is worth four times as much as tellurium dioxide.

If the DeForest plant expands into chemical production, it has potentially two new customers; Q-Cells S.E.’s subsidiary, Calyxo, which works in the area of CdTe thin-film technology, and Abound Solar, another producer of thin-film cadmium telluride solar modules.

5N’s shift into recycling is not surprising, given the fact that world production of cadmium is 14 tonnes per year, most of it coming from Canada, and much of it used in batteries.

Tellurium is even scarcer, at less than 200 metric tons in 2008, and less than 800 metric tons total from all sources.

Contrarian up big brand new solar water heater competition order

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

“Appliances to the countryside opened up a brand new solar water heater off competition.” Jiang Feng, Secretary General of the Chinese home appliance says.

This reporter noted that since the inception countryside home appliances, solar sales usher in a new situation, the industry has entered a rapid development of competition in the track. Especially in the last two years, at the Four Seasons songs, etc. Mu active promotion of the mainstream brands, the domestic solar industry is expected to open the era of brand competition.

The rise of new leading brands

The domestic solar market this year, the most popular topic, comes as the four seasons song Mu industry represented the rise of the brand new leader.

Solar energy products to rural areas in 2009 and the Industry Development Summit Forum, president of Four Seasons songs Mu Li Jun said, 1-6 months of this year, the solar energy fell 30% overall sales of the context, Mu-song Seasons is across the board gains across the board, sales up appeared in 77% of growth, market share, brand influence and voice industry has also been improved rapidly. More critically, the four seasons song Mu compete in the market from year to capture the market participants focus changed to lead the industry, manufacturing market focus, and promote industry upgrading and progress leader.

A water distributor in Jiangsu ring boss Zhang told reporters, “Mu-song from the four seasons since the early market, sales of water in the ring on the good. The key is product quality, product feature-rich, enterprise marketing and brand operation is standard, promise will be honored on the dealer. At present, we are following more than 10 towns of the business cooperation with the Four Seasons song Mu 6 years, in addition to making money, vision and ideas has also been upgrading. ”

Mu’s song factory to see at the Four Seasons, a Li Chun presented and promoted by the implementation of the innovative integration of theory display card. The main content is that whatever is conducive to solar energy technology development concept and production resources, solar energy applications of marketing models to promote sustainable development, cultural concepts, can be integrated at the Four Seasons song Mu and application, the company eventually evolved into a unique mode of . Industry observers point out that the market from the production line to line, Mu-song Seasons by cultural ideas and the bright future of solar light and heat, building a unique development model, which Mu-song season will be a strong impetus to the market to open up new territory.

Solar Energy experienced observers cold leap that the limit of 10 years, this year is the solar energy industry, the 10-year period. 10 years ago, many enterprises still do not know the future of solar thermal industry, development prospects and the market space, but 10 years later, the industry has ushered in a new development opportunity, and the emergence of the Mu-song taking four seasons, the sun the rain represented by the new industry leading brand. Reporter noted, first developed a number of solar companies, or to switch his business, or stay in place, or face market shocks can he sacrifice the long corner.

Industry highlights the new path

Li Jun told reporters that the cooperation with distributors, not simple interest, but through the cooperation with them, found in the solar energy distribution of a unique business model. Ultimately, through this mode to achieve long-term win-win factories and businesses, this model will eventually be replicated throughout the country and promotion, making the company’s core competitiveness.

This reporter noted that in recent years, Mu-song Four Seasons course in marketing, has been exploring the unique business model. Mu original songs such as Four Seasons marketing meetings and town-site promotion, is deep into the local markets through direct, co-operation with local businesses, organizations hold meetings in all areas of marketing. Adoption of the investment, through investment promotion products and brands. Coupled with the promotion of rural market site, to send product, delivery services, art and other means to send the countryside, promote direct sales through on-site activities. This directly reduced the business of marketing chain, build factories, businesses, consumers Trinity Zero marketing.

In addition to marketing the innovation, the four seasons song Mu upstream product development, technical standards development and integration of resources to promote the industry chain through the integration, it also made a positive exploration. The initial establishment of a company, Mu Seasons song under the “first-class enterprise to make the standard, companies selling second-rate technology, third-rate companies to sell products” strategic positioning, a clear direction for the future development of their own, that is the basis of good products, for technology upgrading and innovation, thereby promoting innovation to upgrade and eventually with their own strengths to promote the standardization of technology related products and universal, to achieve the industry’s leading future trends.

According to the characteristics of solar energy products, in order to solve the two problems endothermic and the heat, season the water heater Mu song pioneered the “double hot” standard, change the vacuum conversion efficiency and improve the efficiency of tank insulation. At the same time, the face of their own solar power environmental protection, but in the production process but there are no environmental issues such as raw materials, Mu-song open industry precedent seasons, and 500 holywell to launch the industry’s “double green standards.”

Industry observers point out that the success of Four Seasons songs Mu, not a single marketing innovation and marketing the results of winning, but the marketing and standards, the integration of technology and products, the realization of the system made the result of force. Meanwhile, the rise of Four Seasons songs Mu also verified the industry’s future development trend is the rise of big brands, industry concentration improve.

Breaking Into the Solar Energy Industry

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

In the face of the current energy crisis, with virtually all of the traditional energy sources rapidly dwindling, there is an increasing interest in alternative energy sources. More and more sectors are realizing the bigger role that alternative energy will play in the coming years, and it is a trend that will likely continue for the foreseeable future. As you can imagine, this will result in plenty of job opportunities in alternative energy, particularly in the field of solar energy.

At present, thousands of new graduates from varying educational backgrounds are considering careers in the field renewable energy. These fresh graduates are ideally positioned to fill the needs of financiers, entrepreneurs, corporate leaders, provided they have the skills and capabilities required in the industry. And that is where the quandary lies.

While there is undoubtedly an increasing demand for experienced and qualified personnel in virtually every aspect of renewable energy, the demand greatly outweighs the supply. At the root of this wide demand and supply gap in the labor market, is the incessant lack of programs which train students careers in environmental jobs or green jobs. This void has begun to be addressed by a few educational institutes such as Boots on the Roof, a growing Solar Training institute in the heart of California, which is running a series of very successful solar training boot camps for students nationwide.

Interestingly enough, many of the professionals currently working in the renewable energy field began their education in other areas, even in fields that are totally unrelated. That being said, the best way to break into the solar energy industry is still by way of a thorough solar education as provided by traditional learning institutions, and Boots on the Roof  is a good example to site here.

The younger generations in particular have taken advantage of courses offered by an increasing number of colleges and universities in sustainability and renewable energy.

In spite of these programs and similar others, solar companies are still dealing with under-staffed teams due to lack of skilled manpower. Some renewable energy organizations that are currently existent are now offering corporate solar training programs which are targeted towards applicants of different capability levels and interests. Some companies even offer solar training courses for military veterans who are looking for careers in the private sector.

You may also want to consider entry-level certificate program such as the ones offered by many technical colleges all over the country. These solar education courses typically consist of 24 hours of instruction, and will provide a basic entry point by which you can explore your opportunities in renewable energy.

While technical knowledge and background in solar courses is undoubtedly essential for those who are seeking careers in renewable energy, some basic business knowledge will come in handy as well.

The Two Sides of Solar

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Knee-jerk reactions will always be around and can be found in many different settings: from on a large scale political level where they’re used as scare tactics and propaganda in our daily life while cruising the Internet. One thing that seems to be stirring the pot of finger-pointers is the report, “Toward a Just and Sustainable Solar Energy Industry”, which was released this month by the Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition. In it, the SVTC urges solar panel manufacture and disposal companies to adapt sustainable practices before we face another environmentally unsafe situation such as the current electronics industry is facing with its millions of tons of waste lying in landfills, unclaimed and unclean.

While we can all agree that it’s impossible to get something for nothing – especially when it comes to energy – some of us are quicker than others to pull the plug before getting the facts straight.

The Dark Side

Large amounts of fossil fuel are used in the production of solar cells, and waste metals such as mercury and chromium that don’t end up being used in solar panel production already offer a predictable disposal problem. With the average life span of a solar panel currently sitting at 25 years, there also presents the threat of an influx of waste all at once at the end of these panels lives. The installation of solar panels requires toxic materials like PVC and glues used in the wiring system, which also poses a real problem that’s hazardous both to the environment and humans. Disposal problems are already mounting in such areas as Asia, where standards are lax compared to North American ones.

The Sunny Side

While many would like to paint it as such, the report by the SVTC is not a damaging one. In fact, it is clear that the environmental benefits of using solar energy far outweigh the negative effects, and that solar is a burgeoning industry still in its infancy. The report serves as an eye-opener to the solar industry to take stock of its practices and their environmental effects before it’s too late, and urges that thought be given to responsible waste disposal and environmentally sound manufacturing processes. Some solar companies have even already begun to invest in recycling programs so people can return their old solar panels, and the U.S. company, First Solar Inc., has devised a plan to take back all solar panels from their commercial customers once the panels have expired. The report also suggests that solar manufacturers encourage high quality jobs within the industry that protect workers’ health and safety as well as provide livable wages throughout the world.

In the end, the amount of energy used in the creation of solar cells and panels is heavily outweighed by the amount of energy produced by them, and the time it takes to pay back the energy used is very short. A solar panel is actually very recyclable, with its two main components being tempered glass and aluminum, two highly sought-after materials. Even the silicon is reusable. As well, the potential problems are being recognized early on in the solar game, which means there’s still time to turn unsafe practices into healthy, green and long-lasting ones.

The Death of Arizona Anti-Solar Bill HB 2701

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Arizona house bill 2701, introduced by Rep. Debbie Lesko, was on its way to killing the state’s solar sector until it was recently dropped. HB 2701 was to allow the state to include nuclear and hydroelectric power in the renewable energy standards of Arizona’s 2025 goal of generating 15% of all its energy from renewable sources.

Representative Kris Mayes, chairman of the Arizona Corporation Commission and author of the state’s current RES program, said HB 2701 “would surely be the death knell for advancing solar energy in the state.”

HB 2701 would prevent solar investment in Arizona by sending the wrong message to utility companies. Permitting nuclear and hydroelectric sources to be used for distributed energy transmission would not leave room for solar companies like SolarCity, Kyocera Solar, and Suntech to provide renewable power to the grid. Needless to say, HB 2701 would also prevent all the solar jobs that were bound to develop in the state. HB 2701 contradicted a mandate for utilities to generate 30% of their power from rooftop solar systems.

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer’s office issued a statement about HB 2701 and its author: “Representative Lesko’s wise and thoughtful actions today to withdraw HB 2701 should be lauded. This sends a clear and united message to employers around the world – Arizona remains the premier destination for solar industries.”

HB 2701 would have made Arizona the only state to include existing nuclear power plants in a renewable energy standard. It’s amazing to think that in 2001, Arizona was one of the first states to introduce an RES attracting many opportunities for solar manufacturing, installation, and research/development.

Turn Up the Heat: Solar Energy is the Answer

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Solar energy is the world’s fastest-growing energy technology for a reason. Just think:  there is plenty of sunlight reaching the earth’s surface. There is much more sunlight, in fact, than the average amount of electrical power consumed by people. And as global warming becomes more of a reality it is imperative that we make finding alternative energy sources more of a priority.

Solar power is pollution free during use, making it very sustainable. This is why so many people are attracted to the idea; it’s a way to nourish our planet.  Solar energy does not contribute to pollution, smog, or acid rain. This means that solar energy actively cuts down on harmful green house gas emissions.

Let’s get to the topic of price. Yes it can be expensive to install a solar energy system, but after that the maintenance fees are practically non-existent. Also keep in mind that the solar system doesn’t need you to add fuel. It doesn’t smell. It doesn’t have moving parts.  And the great thing is, it’s very unlikely it will ever break down. That means once it’s up and working, you can trust that it will stay that way.

Many Californian communities are benefiting economically from solar energy. That is because solar companies create local jobs and wealth. Solaire, a San Diego solar installer has been supplying jobs for people locally for the last ten years. And they make sure to find dedicated employees, which strive to keep their customers satisfied.

Solar energy, in fact, is a big commitment. That is why it is necessary for solar installation companies to offer the highest level of customer commitment possible.  Those companies want to help you make a difference. Can you see the light?

Solaire Energy Systems (http://www.gosolaire.com ) offers the very best in solar energy solutions. With their decade of experience, knowledge and know-how they can reduce drastically or even eliminate completely your need for outside energy sources.
